This is to avoid the problem that automatic spam generators pick up emails from webpages and deluge them with quantities of unwanted spam mail. The address "position@snsbi.org.uk" does not exist and this blocks the unwanted spam mail.

Membership of the Society.

Membership of the Society is open to all who are interested in the study of names including place-names and personal names. The subscription year runs from January 1st to December 31st each year. Members are entitled to copies of the Society journal, NOMINA, published during their membership, plus the right to purchase back numbers at reduced prices. They also get such newsletters as are published, together with preferential booking and rates at the Society s annual weekend Conference and Day Schools and may advertise their research on the Society webpage.

Annual Membership Subscriptions are:- individual £20, family £25, student £5. (If you choose to pay by standing order, you will qualify for slightly lower rates, i.e. Individual £18 and Family £23.) Please click here to obtain an Application Form for Membership. Once it has been printed, it should be completed and posted, along with the subscription, to the Membership Secretary at the following address:- 5 St Edwards Drive, Stow-on-the-Wold, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire GL54 1AW, England.

Important Note to UK Tax Payers: If you pay UK tax, then SNSBI is now registered for Gift Aid, so if you complete a Gift-Aid declaration, we can reclaim the tax on your subscription. If you can help in this way, then please download the Gift Aid form, complete it and send it to the Treasurer.

It will soon be possible to pay subscriptions using Paypal.

To help with administration, the list of members names and addresses is kept on computer. If you would prefer your membership record kept in a "manual" file, please let the Membership Secretary know when you return your application form. Since the address labels are printed from the computer list, mailings to those on the manual file may be slightly delayed.

Members' Queries

In the early days of the Society, the Secretary had time to receive queries from members and pass them on the the member most likely to be able to help. Sadly this is no longer the case. Some problems can be solved by looking at the expertise shown in the Interests page and contacting others working in the same area. However many questions on place names, personal names and surnames can be answered by looking at the information provided in the "standard" reference books. A small selection of these are listed below.

 List of Reference Books
The Concise Oxford Dictionary of English Place-Names by Eilert Ekwall. 4th edition 1959.
The Cambridge Dictionary of English Place-Names by Victor Watts. 2004.
The Landscape of Place-Names by Margaret Gelling and Ann Cole. 2000.
A Dictionary of Surnames by Patrick Hanks and Flavia Hodges. 1988.
Dictionary of the Place-Names of Wales by Hywel Wyn Owen and Richard Morgan. 2007.
Dictionary of British Place-Names by David Mills

 Bursaries for students

Over the past few years, the Society has been able to provide bursaries to help students attend to annual conference. Students who wish to be considered for such busaries should send a request, supported by a letter from their supervisor and giving details of their research to the Treasurer of the Society.
