Membership of the Council was originally by invitation, but in the late 1980s it was felt that an open society would be more appropriate. As a result, the Society for Name Studies in Britain and Ireland was formally inaugurated in November 1991 with its first conference held in Belfast in 1992.

The Society took over the publication of the Council's journal NOMINA and has also organised conferences and day schools annually since then. The present membership of around 200 is drawn mainly from England, Scotland, Wales and the north and south of Ireland. We also have members in Denmark, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, USA and Japan. We welcome new members with an interest in proper names, including place names, personal names and surnames.
